Tour of Palmarola

Cove of Brigantina - Point Vardella

Entering Palmarola on the left hand side there is the stack of Mezzogiorno and on the right is the Punta Vardella.
Cala Brigantina: is known as such since it offered sailors a dock to anchor. Palmarola in the 18th century was still an important base for barbarian pirates. In this area from autumn until spring hundreds of peewit gulls and pregrin hawk nest here.

Suvace Rock

The rock inherits its name due to its shape of a suface fish which is similar to that of a sole fish.

The Forcina

The Forcina: “the great passage of the forcina” is of remarkable geologic interest: the laviche stratifications and taps are easy leggibili. Cove of the Cat: inside there is a sweet water infiltration. Accessible with one small boat. From the Forcina to cove North wind miles 1 - 10 minuteren. Scoglio “Sparmaturo”: from the shape similar to the spalmatoio.

The North wind point

Once doubled the rock of "Scuncillo", due to its likeness to a shell, the sceneario which will appear before you will be as such: on the right the rock of the "Pirates", directly infront the rock of the "Dungeon".

The Cathedral

The point of the "Brecce" is the northern extermity of the Island. Due to the difficulty, it is not reccomended to sail through it with small boats. It is more convenient to double the stack and to stop to admire the "Cathedral".
It is called the cathedral due to the resemblance of the rock to a Gothic cathedral with its arches and pillars.
In the dialect of Ponza the present Cathedral was called " I Senghe ì Tramuntana" ( whch means the of the slits of the northernly winds). From the Tramontana Cove to the Cove of the Port there are 0,5 miles (5 minutes).

The Dungeons

The rocks are speckled with obsidian, black on ocre. In no other place of the Meditterranean does the lavic water present itself in this blot formation .

The pure obsidian glass, is in its natural form, brilliant black. Primitive man used to make spears, axes, knives from it. The Obsidian which is extracted from the island of Palmarola was worked in Ponza and in Zanone, where remains have been found it is likely that finished products were then trasported to the Circeo.

Cove of the Port

It is the only safe dock on the island, if you encounter any difficulty return to this area (radio contact with Ponza - dock for mainline boats - port). On the beach there are 2 restaurants, and it is possible to sleep on the Island in houses- caves carved in the rock by the first collonials that inhabited the Island of Palmarola.

Stack of S.Silverio

On the stack, built by the inhabitants of Ponza is the chappel of St. Silverio, with the statue of the Saint and an oil lamp that devotees keep constantly lit.

Rock Pallante

At the exit of the cave - passaggio di mezzogiorno ( accessible via medium sized boats) one finds the Pallante stack , favourite dwelling of a rare collony of minor shearwater.

Rock of the gun

The Island in the past years and still to this day is going through great changes and tranformations caused by marine and aeolian erossions. The centre part that connected the natural arch has fallen due to a violent storm in November of 1966.

Stack of Mezzogiorno

Its name is easily deduced, it comes from the southernly orientation of the stack.
